Beans, blackfly and a bloody snail! May 20, 2007

Bigger beans, blackfly, snail

The broad beans we were given as a present (thanks Graham!) have shot up in the recent rain. Luckily, my cane structure has survived, as it seems the garden gets a lot of wind. I only used string but did top it up with some twine recently.

I spotted some blackfly on the plant this morning, but only a little, so snipped off the stem and stuck it in the rubbish bin, out front. Rhubarb spray is the way to kill it off, that’s a project for this afternoon. Lets hope it doesn’t take hold.

Also spotted a snail, but only on the photo! God help him if i’d caught him!

I cant remember where I saw this tip fo eradicating aphids but it works wonderfully.
Half a bucket stinging nettles–3or 4 cloves of garlic squashed a bit.Half fill bucket with water and stir 2 or 3 times a day for 2 days.
With an old (large)paintbrush or similar swoosh the solution over your beans, roses etc.
It was reccomended that you use daily for 2 or 3 days but I have found one application is enough.
I dont know how it may affect bees(it didnt say)so I use it at dusk just to be sure,
    Happy gardening,Polly.
